Your Ultimate Guide to Getting Married in Croatia

Tips from a Wedding Photographer for an Unforgettable Celebration

Dreaming of getting married in Croatia? As a wedding photographer who’s had the privilege of capturing love stories all across this breathtaking country—from the ancient walls of Dubrovnik to the vineyards of Istria—here’s a complete guide to help you plan your day stress-free and in style – Guide to Getting Married in Croatia.

1. Choose the Right Location / Guide to Getting Married in Croatia

Croatia offers something for every couple:

  • Dubrovnik: Iconic old town, sea views, historic churches & fortresses (like Lovrijenac or Sponza Palace).
  • Hvar & Vis: Island elegance, beach ceremonies, relaxed Mediterranean vibes.
  • Istria: Rolling vineyards, hilltop towns (like Motovun or Grožnjan), ideal for countryside or rustic weddings.
  • Split & Dalmatia: Roman ruins, seaside villas, and perfect sunsets.

Photographer’s Tip: Consider the light! Summer sun can be harsh and in Croatia the sun is high up all up to two hours before the sun sets. Sunset ceremonies (around golden hour) are dreamy and perfect for photos. If that’s too late for ceremony (in. high season around 7.30pm), at least schedule a short sunset private time. Perhaps bring your photographer along!

2. Best Time to Get Married in Croatia

  • High Season: May to September – warm weather, but popular venues book fast.
  • Shoulder Season: April or October – still mild, fewer tourists, more availability.
  • Winter Weddings: although not so common for destination weddings

If you’re not from Croatia, you have two options:

  • Legal Ceremony: Possible, but requires paperwork, translations, and coordination with the registry office.
  • Symbolic Ceremony: Much easier—get legally married at home and celebrate freely here with no paperwork stress.

Photographer’s Tip: Symbolic ceremonies allow for more flexibility with timing, locations, and creativity. But I dare say they have a lighter atmosphere. Check the official Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs site for detailed legal info.

4. Hire a Local Wedding Planner

A good planner makes all the difference. They know:

  • They know professional vendors and people you can count on
  • Legal requirements
  • How to coordinate everything seamlessly (especially for destination weddings)

Most of my couples are from abroad (UK, US, Germany, Australia) and say hiring a planner was the best decision they made.

5. Choose a Photographer Who Knows the Region

Croatia is filled with unique light, landscapes, and venues—so choose a photographer who knows the area and can guide you through timing, locations, and natural moments.

I’m based in the capital, and I work all over—from north to south, even Italy and Austria. My style blends documentary and editorial: I capture real emotions, without forced poses, and always make space for beautiful portraits in natural light.

6. Add Local Touches

Make your Croatian wedding feel unique by including:

  • Local wine or olive oil favors
  • Traditional musicians (klapa singers or tamburica bands)
  • Perhaps adding a little tradition from Croatian weddings, depending on region
  • A boat ride or welcome dinner with sea views

7. Plan Ahead & Communicate with Guests

  • Send Save the Dates early (8–12 months in advance)
  • Suggest travel options and accommodations
  • Plan group activities (wine tasting, boat trips, local tours) to make it a full experience

Bonus: My Favorite Venues in Croatia

Here are just a few unforgettable locations I’ve photographed:

  • Fort George, Vis – Golden light, sea views, and privacy
  • Villa Polesini, Poreč – Elegant seaside villa
  • Sponza Palace, Dubrovnik – Iconic Old Town magic
  • San Canzian Village & Hotel, Istria – Intimate luxury in nature
  • Heritage Winery Weddings in Hvar & Pelješac
